Seriously Screwed Up Computer
« on: December 06, 2005, 11:54:44 PM »
My computer decided to commit suicide.

It's a hardware problem, so I've no idea how to fix it.

As I'll only be able to access my accounts from public places, I'm sorry, but updates will be sporadic.

Hopefully my computer gets revived, but in case it doesn't...

Here's to hope:

"Tyrantmizar,"

As my training is in the Electronics field and have been involved in that for about 50 years or more, maybe I can give you some suggestions on where to dump it.  NO, just kidding, could your battery have died?  Will it not respond at all?  Will it POST?  (That is Pre-Operating System Test before the screen comes up with the instructions on how to enter the SetUp program.)  Maybe it is just having problems recognizing the H/D?  Give us some clues, Man, we would like to assist you.

"Tyrantmizar,"

If it is not recognizing the H/D it could be just some dirty contacts on the DATA cable (ribbon cable) from the H/D to the MoBd.  Insure you are touching the metal case of the computer before doing any work inside.  You need to insure you are grounded so there is not a chance of static electricty being injected into any of the circuitry.  Have you ever had the case open?  I can talk you through it if you need the guidance.

Thanks, but no thanks.

It somehow fixed itself (WTF?)

Actually, it fixed itself once (I cleaned out all the connections), but after I shut it down, it wouldn't start up again.

Are there that many benefits of leaving the computer on all the time?  Is there a way I can have Windows XP defragment or something during the night?

I don't expect too much of an answer.  Apparently there's a big debate over shutting down versus leaving on.

If you decide to leave it on, why not contribute to humanity by helping find a cure for cancer, solve protein folding problems, fight AIDS, etc...

This list is fairly comprehensive and shows dozens of projects to which your unused CPU cycles can contribute.

You don't have to be an open-source developer to help make the world a better place :)
