Reverse Auto-Populate Override
« on: August 25, 2005, 03:23:38 PM »
I'd really like this to be the default behavior, but at a minimum, I'd like a Global Setting option to make the Account Specific 'Auto-populate' option override the 'Defaults' setting, which is the opposite of the way it is now.

Added as "Change the Auto-Populate Priority."

If you want it to be called something different, just say so.

Can we call this black-lists instead? I think that's what you're getting at. Right now we only have white-list capability.

No, I don't think you understand...

Currently, the 'Auto-populate' option exists in both the Defaults and as an Account Specific setting.

Also, currently, according to the parenthetical text for the one on the Defaults, the Defaults setting overrides the Account Specific setting.

This is, imho, backwards from the way it should be.

Account Specific Settings should *always* override the Defaults Settings, no?

I guess. The bottom line is auto-populate needs to be completely reworked. It should be removed from the Account-Specific Settings dialogs altogether and given its own tab on the Advanced Settings dialog. This tab wouldl allow you define whitelists, blacklists, and defaults for auto-populate.

Tyrantmizar, can you put this in the feature request list?

Thanks,
Eric

Sorry, I got slammed yesterday...

I'm not sure I follow...

Currently, I only see it in the Advanced Settings.

I think it is a very good thing to have this be an Account Specific option. Are you saying it shouldn't be? If so, I'd like to discuss it further... ;)

I can definitely see the advantage of integrating this Account Specific option with the white/blacklists, but I think it also makes sense to be able to see at a glance, when looking at the Account Specific Settings, whether or not this Account will auto-populate or not. Or maybe I'm missing something about your suggestion? Probably, as your solutionas always seem to make more sense in the end.  :)

Hi guys, I think tanstaafl is talking about the precedence.  It appears that he is saying that when auto-populate is not checked in the account settings, but it is checked in the default settings, it gets populated.  If that is so, I would have to agree with tanstaafl, as it does seem backward.  The more specific account setting should override the less specific default setting.

I personally have not observed that, because I haven't tried this scenarion, so I don't know.

That does make since.  The way its setup now there are two options. 1) Have the global setting on and all sites will populate.  2) Have the global setting off and then you have the option to turn them on individually.
If you chose to have the global setting on it overrides any account specific setting and the auto-populate check mark box becomes useless.

Thanks for checking that.  I thought that that is what tanstaafl was talking about.  So, it appears that Eric is making a mountain out of a mold hill, trying to reword the entire interface.   :)

tanstaafl, is that indeed, what you were talking about ?

It is what tanstaafl was talking about. Romeo and quixin understand him perfectly (as do I--at least in this request :))

Maybe I got a little frustrated last night and overreacted. Sorry for that. I'm just anticipating the implementation...

Tyrantmizar says he added this to the list as "Change the Auto-Populate Priority", but I don't see it so I'm going to add it now...

Eric, don't worry about that.  We all know how it is.  Remember you can't be all things to all the people all the time.   :)

Sorry - apparently I wasn't subscribed to this forum, and didn't see all of these posts...

Yes, changing the precedence is what I was talking about.

Thanks guys! Can't wait for 0.8 - and then 0.9 - and then 1.0!

Hmmm... what feature is it that will result in PM deserving of the 1.0 milestone? Auto-cook-breakfast option? Or maybe Foot-massage-on-demand?

Thanks, Eric, for all your hard work - and tell your wife thanks too! ;)

I've been thinking about that myself lately. I think auto-populate arbitrary fields (not just username & password) should signal 1.0. That's will be a major achievement, IMHO.

In all seriousness, I think that sounds like an excellent target for the milestone.

0.8 is awesome - thanks again!
