Huh...

I've been so busy, I must not have done much poking around in Pm since I upgraded.

I see that you have added the 'Group' feature - great!

Now, if you could just add the ability to 'View by Group' or 'View by Account', I caould consider this aspect closed.

What feature was that? I've forgotten myself now :)

This also assumes an account can belong to more than one group, right?

Correct - that was the whole idea, so that you could have different views of the same Accounts, some of which might belong to more than one Group.

Also, there was going to be at least one 'Default' group - 'URL' - so that you could view your Accounts 'by URL'.

I'm still not sure how this works.  I getting the feeling that this would first require a sort of Gmail-like labeling system.  But I'm not sure what you mean by "View by Group" and "View by Account."  Could you please elaborate?

I realize you probably already said this somewhere.  If you really don't want to type it out, just link to the original post and I take a look at it.

I'm going to add the "Label" feature to the list, but I'm going to wait on the other one until I understand more about it (so that I can paraphrase it better).

I don't think he's requesting labels, and unless someone else is requesting it, maybe you could take it off the list. What he wants is the ability to assign an account to more than one group. For example, let's say I define the groups:
  • Tyrantmizar's accounts
  • Eric's accounts
  • Taanstafl's accounts
  • Gmail accounts
  • Yahoo accounts
Now suppose I define 6 accounts with these names/descriptions:
  • name: ejung, description: ejung on gmail.com
  • name: ejung, description: ejung on yahoo.com
  • name: tyrant, description: tyrant on gmail.com
  • name: tyrant, description: tyrant on yahoo.com
  • name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on gmail.com
  • name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on yahoo.com
I should be able to define which groups each account belongs to, even if it's more than one group. Given the above info, a logical way to assign accounts to groups could be:
  • + Tyrantmizar's accounts
  • ------- name: tyrant, description: tyrant on gmail.com
  • ------- name: tyrant, description: tyrant on yahoo.com
  • + Eric's accounts
  • ------- name: ejung, description: ejung on gmail.com
  • ------- name: ejung, description: ejung on yahoo.com
  • +Taanstafl's accounts
  • ------- name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on gmail.com
  • ------- name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on yahoo.com
But one might also want to view all accounts ordered by URL; e.g.,
  • + yahoo.com
  • ------- name: ejung, description: ejung on yahoo.com
  • ------- name: tyrant, description: tyrant on yahoo.com
  • ------- name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on yahoo.com
  • + gmail.com
  • ------- name: ejung, description: ejung on gmail.com
  • ------- name: tyrant, description: tyrant on gmail.com
  • ------- name: taanstafl, description: taanstafl on gmail.com
Does that make sense? If you know SQL, think of the group by or order by clauses. I think this is important to people with a huge number of accounts to manage, but not the "average" PasswordMaker user.

Ok.  That makes sense.

You're right, it isn't labeling, though it borrows certain aspects from it.

I'll add it to the list right away.

One thing though.  This seems like an incredibly complex system.  Wouldn't it be better to be able to organize the whole list by the various elements (URL to match, username, etc.)?  Granted, it would be difficult to acheive between Groups, but that could be worked around.

Perhaps there should be a context menu option that creates a new (probably) temporary folder that has all of the similar criteria.  If you want all of the accounts that match URL to use: yahoo.com,  then you just right click on an account that has that URL, and a seperate group will be appended with all of those accounts.

Heck, while you're at it, you could create a full fledged search command, with the ability to search by each of the variables, or some combination of them.

Think about it a bit.  Dismiss it if you want.  Perhaps I still don't understand it, and I'm trying to solve a different problem than the one we're trying to fix here.

The main thing I'd want to do is view by URL - I'm not in a huge hurry for the ability to create my own groups, although I do think that would be useful. If it is a programming nightmare, though, maybe you should put it off until PM is perfect and you have nothing more to add to it?  ;)

Hmmm...

When I saw the 'New Group' button, I thought this was for this 'Group' functionlity' we are discussing - now I see (and remember) that it is just the 'Folders' renamed...

The main thing I'd want to do is view by URL - I'm not in a huge hurry for the ability to create my own groups and be able to have an Account belong to more than one group, although I do think that would be useful. If it is a programming nightmare, though, maybe you should put it off until PM is perfect and you have nothing more to add to it?  ;)

Ok, if that's the main request, then how about I make the columns in the tree sortable? When you click on the URL heading, the tree would reorder itself by URL (of course, you must have the URL heading turned on so it can be clicked--you can do this by using the checking Url To Use in the tree picker.

Ok, I finally got the time to get these done...

First, there is a minor cosmetic thing to fix:

In the 'New Group' pop-up, change the words 'Folder' to 'Group', and remove the redundant '(required)' and '(optional)' labels (they are there twice).

You're reading my mind... ;) This is actually a part of my updated request for this feature, which I've just posted:

Of course, simply sorting on the URL (and other) columns is definitely needed, I would also like the ability to view them in Trees as you described above. That is, in fact, what I was trying to describe with words.

I'm reqorking my request a little, becuase one part of it - dealing with this part (View by URL) doesn't make sense.

Tyrantmizar,

Can you add "Ability to sort accounts tree by column" to the list?

Thanks

I've got a question about "Ability to sort accounts tree by column". Should the accounts only be sorted by group name (i.e., top-level folders)? Should they be sorted within folders? Both?
