Location of master password file
« on: May 25, 2005, 01:45:11 PM »
It would be good to clearly document the location where the master password is stored, if the user selects to have it stored to disk. This way, the user could conveniently instruct the operating system to encrypt this file.

As you probably know, OS-level encryption is much stronger than what the extension can do by itself, since it is keyed off the password used to log into the workstation.

Even better would be for the extension to do this, but I suspect that Firefox would need to provide core support for such a feature.

Good idea. I'll add that documentation to 0.6 in a prominent place (perhaps alerting the user of the file's location if he chooses to store the password on disk).

Firefox extensions can call native OS code, so actually this can be achieved today. However, it would require a native crypter DLL or SO to be written for all supported OSes (windows, mac, *nix)... something I really don't want to do. I'd rather commit that sort of time to implementing the J2ME PasswordMaker edition for mobile phones and PDAs.

I would like the disk location to be configurable. The default location of %ProfileDirectory%/passwordmaker.rdf doesn't lend itself well to moving it onto an encrypted or better yet stego'ed volume.

Hm, that's a good idea! I will add it to the feature list.

Thanks,

Hello

I would like to register a vote to make the location of the master password configurable please (perhaps involving a "Browse" dialogue box). Hopefully this will not require a large amount of work.

Certainly it can be of use if you can save your master password to a flash drive and then take it with you!

I will look around and see which other options seem appropriate to vote for.
