Title: Sharing PWM with Firefox and Mozilla
Post by: major4579 on July 05, 2006, 10:19:17 PM
I have been using PWM 1.5.1 and Mozilla for awhile. I'm trying to make the change to Firefox though I have not fully committed to it yet.

I was unable to find the answer to my question on the forum..

Is there any way to share the PWM files between the 2 so that if I make an account change in one browser it will show in the other. If necessary I could limit myself to running only one browser at a time.

I'm running:

Firefox 1.5.0.4
Mozilla 1.7.12

Thanks,
John

Start firefox.exe with the "-profile" switch. Create a new profile and point it to Mozilla profile's directory. See if it works. IOW, you're trying to get both profiles (FF's and Mozilla's) to use the same directory. I don't know if that's possible.

Eric,

I don't think I want both browsers to use the same profile as I have different and/or program specific extensions installed.

I just want to tell PWM where to look for the password info - but it sounds like thats not an option. I'm guessing from your answer that PWM looks in the current browser profile and there is no way to change that...

Thanks,
John

That is a feature request, so it may very well appear later on.

While waiting for that feature, you can also use a program like this one (http://www.filesland.com/companies/GdP-Software/watchDirectoryFree.html) to watch the PasswordMaker file (or directory) and write a bat script that runs automatically, and copies the PasswordMaker file to that other location.

I haven't tried it myself yet, so I don't know how easy it is to set up, tell us if you need some help.

Oops, sorry, missed that.

In that case he can even make a cron job, that checks the two files every five minutes, and copies according to changes.

Eric,

No I'm on Windows 2K - always have been.

I'm trying to stay in Firefox so I haven't been too worried about the PWM file, when needed I export it directly to the other profile.

My mine problem with Firefox is that I have to locate and install so many extensions to get the same capabilities that are built into Mozilla.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. FWIW, I *will* be adding the ability to configure the passwordmaker.rdf location.

interesting program Thibros. i've long wanted something like that for windows. i made a small linux shell script to copy the passwordmaker.rdf file for use between windows and linux boxes, but it's not so easy to do in windows.

Can't he just symlink one to the other?

major4579 (John) is a unix/linux user. I remember that about him from previous conversations.

And yet in this thread, he states that he's a Windows user.
