Title: How do I change my Master Password?
Post by: johndoes on September 07, 2009, 07:42:49 PM
I've been using Passwordmaker for years now. I've stored my Master Password on disk. Now I want to change it, but I don't know how. There is no option to re-type it, no option to delete it from disk. How can I change my Master Password?

I haven't use the option myself so I may not know the exact details, but to change it, just switch the storage method from save to disk to not at all.

Yeah, what Miquelfire said will work, but hopefully you actually remember what it was... ;)

Just remember - changing your MPW is as simple as typing in a different one, but all it does is change the generated password to a different one for any site/account you have. You will have to change the actual password at each site before the new password will work.

Passwordmaker doesn't prompt me anymore for my Master Password and so it doesn't prompt me to save or not to save the MP to disk. It is already saved and I can't find any option to either change it or delete it!!!

You have to 'Open' Passwordmaker...

Either :

Ctrl-tick (Ctrl-`)

or

Tools > Passwordmaker > Open Passwordmaker

I obviously don't make myself understood...

I open Passwordmaker, I've already got the Advanced Options view enabled, but under Global Settings, or in fact anywhere in the Passwordmaker window, there is no option to either change my MP, or delete, or retype it, or 'unsave' it from disk, or whatever...

Either you're missing something obvious, or your PWM is messed up...

When you open PWM, the left side of the PWM window should have your MPW field (already filled in), as well as the option to 'Store Master Password', which should be set to 'On disk & in mem...'

Change 'On disk & in mem...' to 'Not at all'

The above should also work in 'Basic Options' mode as well... try changing to Basic Options and see if you see it...

Otherwise, try uninstalling PWM, restart Firefox, then reinstall it.

Oh... what version of PWM and Firefox? Windows? Linux?

Yes, I was missing something very obvious  :-[

I had activated the option 'Hide Master Password Field (number of asterisks)'

Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for your efforts...

Ahh... I started to ask you about those global options but didn't because I didn't realize that would hide the 'Store master password' field too.

I learned something new... :)

Glad you got it sorted...
