Title: Option for better default character list?
Post by: Tim on July 26, 2005, 02:20:34 PM
The default of MD5 8 char password with a-f, 0-9 only yields only a *32 bit* effective password length. You wouldn't use a secure website with only 40bit encryption would you?

Changing it means typing in a character string - *identically* - on every computer you use. How about a simple check box in the settings to use all possible alpha-numerics? And maybe an option to use all printable ascii?

Hi Tim,
Yep, that was already requested by Tyrantmizar on another thread. It's already been added to the code and will be in the next release. Actually, it's not a checkbox but a drop-down list of canned strings.

The reason for the a-f, 0-9 default is historical: it produces the same passwords as PasswordMaker 0.6 and earlier.

Eric
