Current options/solutions for syncing between two computers?
« on: August 11, 2006, 09:17:43 AM »
I've seen some old threads about this topic, but couldn't find any answers. Does anyone have a working solution for syncing between two computers? I have Firefox running on two macs (home and work) and using Google Browser Sync which is great, but I don't think that keeps my pasword file in sync and I'd like to make sure that it is.

Thanks!

Hi,

There's the upload/download capability so you can manually sync, but no automated way yet.

Hmm. I seem to be having problems connecting to my WebDav disc via Password Maker. It gives me an obscure error message: 0x193. What might be wrong? I've checked the path and the username/password, they all seem correct.

Hi,

sorry for taking this old thread, but the subject perfectly fit my needs.
I use passwordmaker on my desktop and on an USB-stick with PortableApps.
My problem: When adding an entry on the desktop, and later add another entry in the mobile, how can I sync them ? If I only export one of them and import the settings to the other, I loose the newly added entry there, right ?
Any solutions for this ?

Thank you in advance !

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Unfortunately, there's no synching mechanism. I'd recommend you always use the USB device. Perhaps other people have different suggestions.

This is a non-technical..... poor man's solution....

I've been exploring DropBox as a way of sharing files between computers.... work and home to be specific. It has been working just great and works for importing and exporting passwords from PWM.... When you export the file to your DropBox (a local folder on your machine monitored by the DropBox app.) it is send to there site. From there all other machines associated with that account get the copy on their DropBoxes when they are used.

An account with them is free for a 2 gig limit.

Now if I could get PWM to update the file in my dropbox automatically or if I could get it to read from its source that I could change the location for.... we have it made.

I think having PWM's default RDF be nothing more than a pointer to the RDF with all the info will be enough to handle things like Dropbox and any other file syncing system a user has if they don't want to include the whole Firefox profile.

Well I figured that if you have a MasterPassword , then  you could use either portable , downloadable or web based retrieval system to find any given password to any such site that PWM was used to manage the passwords?..

therefore would you not download/install PWM into the new machines browser (Firefox) and enter your MPW to be allowed to log into respective sites?

if you have multiple passwords for say social network sites = 1 password
for banks = different password then you would only need to remember these 2 passwords as well as the protocols used to encrypt them of course.

perhaps thats where things get complicated , forgetting the protocols used to generate the passwords for such sites.

 :-\

personally I use limited protocols with 10-12 alphanumeric hash combination's for Banks and 8-10 for personal , i have 2 MPW's and thats it.
when I goto work I install the firefox plugin and set up the 2 accounts with their respective protocols.
enter the MPW and wala instant access to all.

forgetting the protocols used to generate the passwords for such sites.

Yes, that is the problem.

Pointing PasswordMaker to another directory for passwordmaker.rdf shouldn't be too difficult. Are we saying that if I implement that, we can use DropBox for syncing? (I still haven't tried DropBox).

Being able to tell PasswordMaker to look elsewhere for a file will allow any backup/sync util to work (if you don't want to include your whole FF profile, and the util only operates on a directory level)

Sounds promising, I'll have to try the DropBox idea.

perhaps that's where things get complicated , forgetting the protocols used to generate the passwords for such sites
That's exactly the issue. If sites were all the same in their PW requirements, but they aren't. Especially since so many sites have different restrictions on allowed PWs (alpha only, no special characters, etc.).

Sure I create Groups for each category and Accounts for each site, but that's not easily managed across 6 computers --- that's a lot of manual recreation.
