Title: Safari version?
Post by: Ketsuban on December 21, 2009, 04:24:11 AM
I'm currently using Firefox on Ubuntu, but I've recently acquired a PowerBook G4, currently in transit, onto which I plan on installing Mac OS X 10.5. Once I'm using that I'd like to start using Safari, since it performs better than Firefox. However, that would require me to give up PasswordMaker which I like a great deal.

Is there a plan to create a PasswordMaker extension for Safari? I saw Rupe's thread from back in October and considered necromancing it, but decided against it. At any rate, he didn't know if it would work on versions prior to 10.6.

I'm not aware of any developers who can support it right now. The bookmarklet (Click! Edition on the wiki) would be the closest thing right now.

There is also a Mac Dashboard widget, but I don't think it supports all of the features from the Firefox edition. Give it a try.

By the way, Firefox without any extensions installed is definitely "faster" than Safari. There are stats about this all over the web :)

Sadly, extensions are like potato chips, you can't just have one. :(

Dear All

I finished my thesis just before xmas and now have time to actually do this. I will do a little more research and then post some comments about my plans. I will probably try and port one of the other versions to Cocoa.

Any suggestions? In particular, could someone knowledgeable about Firefox please answer the following (since that version appears to me to be the most feature-rich): How specific to FF is its code? I've done no more with FF than browse the web and don't want to have to pick apart a whole new language/API or whatever it is.

Happy Hogmanay to all!
Regards,

Rupe.

All GUI code is Firefox specific (the language that defines how the windows look)

The Javascript version is the easiest to get code from actually.

You could also look at Safari Adblock (http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock) for how to produce a Safari extension. It's GPL-licensed, so all their code is available.

As of Safari 5, Safari "unofficially" supports extensions now. It is just, Apple didn't setup an "app store" for them. So, no need for "input managers" or "saft" like applications, Safari will be able to run Firefox style extensions soon.

As it runs under Windows, it will be easy to test/develop too. Just reminding if you don't follow OS X scene or the iPad etc. noise is too high to follow :)

At it's current state (I looked into Safari 5's extensions), PasswordMaker requires more features for extension makers to use. Basically, we would need to make something like the bookmarklet to handle the actual password generation settings, or make lots of toolbars... If you want more than one profile that is.

OK. I wanted a Safari extension too, and there wasn't one.

So I made one - a Safari extension (working on my Mac) for Safari 6.
I'll happily share with people who'd like to test it out.

Does Safari have some collection or something you could post it to? Kinda like the App Store or something?

(Don't have a Mac)

Yes - there are multiple safari extensions lists - one official apple one that I know of.
I wanted to do more testing before I was willing to post it there. But I'm happy to help out people who want to try early.
(it should work on mac or PC safari),

I'll update if I post it elsewhere.

I see, you're not ready to call it production, I understand then.
